Second Avenue Graphic Artist Wins Award for Visual Effects
Ashville, NC - August 21, 2007 - Congratulations to one of our team members, Janis Acampora, for helping to bring home the Best Special Effects award from the Greensboro 48 Hour Film Project for the short film DeKay. Janis is one of our illustrators and animators specializing in medical illustration here at Second Avenue, working remotely from her office in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.
The 48 Hour Film Project is an extreme-filmmaking event that takes place in 50 cities across the US. The competing teams gather on a designated evening, draw their assigned genre from a hat, and are assigned a specific prop, character and line of dialogue to use. They are then set free to create a film in 48 hours or less. "The key is to get the film in on time, meeting all requirements; only then are you a candidate for an award," explained Janis. "It's a challenge to see how far you can go in two days' time and what kind of cinematic masterpiece you can create."
Janis participated in this year's 48 Hour Film Project event with a team called 9 lb. Hammer. There she met Robert Klein of Klein Digital (www.kleindigital.com), and the two of them worked 36 hours straight to create the award-winning graphics.
"Our genre was 'Detective/Cop', our line of dialogue was 'Hug me close and call me Sugar', our prop was a magnifying glass, and our character was 'Joe Taylor, night watch security man'," Janis said. "Our writers decided to make this a sci-fi cop/detective movie, so our magnifying glass prop was up for all kinds of interpretation. Thus, we went Minority Report-style and composited animation over the empty glass prop, to make a virtual interface. Then, with some special presets and some keying in After Effects, we made it actually magnify. That was the highlight of all the work we did for the film."
DeKay also won the award for Best Editing. A full list of the winners can be found here.
